Over one year of treatment, biological therapy improved coronary artery plaques in a manner similar to a low-dose statin.

The prevalence of previously undetected dysglycaemia is high in patients who are free from cardiovascular disease but have one or two other risk factors (hypertension and/or dyslipidaemia). A new study shows that using the FINDRISC questionnaire as a first step of dysglycaemia screening does not provide any benefit in this population.

Addition of rivaroxaban to aspirin lowers major vascular events but increases major bleeding in patients with stable coronary artery disease. There was no significant increase in intracranial bleeding or other critical organ bleeding. There was also a significant net benefit in favour of rivaroxaban plus aspirin and deaths were reduced by 23%.

Semaglutide, an investigational human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue, significantly reduced the risk of the primary composite endpoint of time to first occurrence of cardiovascular (CV) death, non-fatal myocardial infarction or non-fatal stroke by 26% vs placebo, when added to standard of care in adults with type 2 diabetes at high CV risk.

A new study shows that long-term daily aspirin use in people aged ≥75 years, is linked to a higher than expected risk of disabling or fatal bleeding. While short-term aspirin use after a stroke or heart attack has clear benefits, the study authors say that older patients who take aspirin on a daily basis should also be prescribed a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) to reduce the risk of bleeding.

A recent study using data from the UK Paediatric Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Register shows that statin therapy reduces LDL cholesterol by 31% with no associated liver or muscle damage. Statin use in children is not associated with any reductions in growth rate and is safe in childhood, with no biochemical evidence of toxicity over a 2- to 3-year period.

Two studies highlight the long-term implications of childhood obesity. The first study shows that obese children have increased arterial damage and an enhanced likelihood of pre-diabetes in adulthood which, in turn, increases the chance of developing cardiovascular disease.
